In the Slayer Tower, you'll be OSRS GP able to kill them more quickly with melee, so if that's what you're looking for, go this route. Armor is your best defense against magic (Attack is melee, but its defense is based on magic, so d'hide and the similar) or when you're feeling like praying (Bit of an unnecessary expense unless you're fighting the mutants with cannon) the best prayer protection and pray to protect melee. For weapons , choose your most effective weapon for slash.
Personally, I would prefer range because they're amazing as range xp are essentially huge meatsacks. There are also a lot of semi-safespots in the slayer tower that you can use to vary them from.
Because you'll be trying to spot them (Getting them entangled in the walls, rubble piles and the like since they cover two squares) choose the best range equipment, including archer the helm or robin, the best dragonhide, snakeskin boots and ranger.
For weapons, you can use a the magic shortbow or rune crossbow using whatever arrows or bolts you like. If you've completed Seergaze's legacy and are looking for the fastest xp, take an axe and prayer gear to the tunnels that are near the altar of blood. Locate the room that has mutants, pray melee and then start the cannon. Make sure that auto retaliate is turned activated and then go. The task will be completed in no time. It costs a lot of money , however it's one of the fastest tasks you can complete. With an abundance of hitpoints, it's one of the most efficient for exp.
